Education and technology, Athens

George Ntemos

I am Director General of City Unity College in Athens. I joined in 2011 as an IT administrator on the help desk and never left. Since July 2025 I have also been CEO of Epsilon College.

Profile

I came to education through its infrastructure: cabling, switches, servers, a help desk. For three years I worked that help desk for faculty, staff and students. Higher education should stay close to the real needs of the technology industry. Whatever the tool, AI included, a person answers for the result.

Today my work is two colleges. City Unity College, where I am Director General, offers Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes in central Athens. Epsilon College, where I have been Chief Executive Officer since July 2025, provides postgraduate degrees for professionals, in collaboration with internationally recognised universities. I also co-own Datapack.net, an IT consultancy and hosting business.

From 2011 to 2023 my work at City Unity College was its systems: workstations, VLANs, daily backups, then the ticketing system, procurement and security policy. The habits carried into this office. Plan the budget, document the procedure, protect the data. Confidentiality, integrity and availability turn out to be reasonable goals for a college too.

Career

One college. Four titles. Fifteen years.

I joined City Unity College in June 2011 to work the help desk. I am still at the college. The job description has changed three times, each version wider than the last.

Step 01 / 04Jun 2011 — May 2014

IT Administrator

I provided technical support on campus and an online help desk for faculty, staff and students. I fixed what broke across Windows, Linux and Mac, laid CAT 5/6 cabling and set up free Wi-Fi for students. I also wrote the procedures down.

  • Daily backups for Windows and Linux servers
Step 02 / 04May 2014 — Dec 2023

The work moved from fixing machines to planning for them. I managed the ticketing system and the network infrastructure, planned the IT budget, and designed and deployed network extensions between multiple offices.

  • 320+ workstations on Windows 10 and Windows 7
  • Bitdefender GravityZone endpoint protection and security policy enforcement
  • Remote support for campus, offices and NOC
Step 03 / 04Apr 2018 — Dec 2023

Beyond

Outside the office.

Three things from outside the two colleges: a community wireless network, open-source mentoring, and a drone pilot certificate.

Volunteering

Twenty years on a community backbone

The Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network is a community-driven wireless network in the Athens region. I have volunteered on its backbone since February 2006. I have operated and maintained two active backbone nodes and taken part in deploying new ones locally. The work is hardware setup, signal alignment, troubleshooting, and sharing what I know with other members. Open, decentralised networking.

  • Node 15680
  • Since 2006

Mentoring

Open source and Arduino at NTUA

From 2014 to 2017 I mentored students and professionals at the National Technical University of Athens on real open-source projects: Linux, Git, version control, community contribution. Two projects are associated with that work, both on Arduino: Internet of Things, in two parts, and the development of a wearable system for use in sports.

Airspace

Also certified to fly drones

In November 2022 I was certified as a UAS Remote Pilot in the Open Category by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. In plain terms, a drone pilot. The certificate sits beside two Data Protection Officer qualifications and one in data wiping and destruction.

Notes

On the record.

I write on LinkedIn about artificial intelligence, authorship and the link between higher education and the technology industry. Three excerpts from 2026, unedited.

On the EU AI ActLinkedIn, 2026

The real conversation shouldn’t be about whether AI was involved. It should be about who takes responsibility for the final output.

On books and generative AILinkedIn, 2026

In the age of AI, authentic human knowledge may become the world’s most valuable resource.

On becoming an Omada Certified InstructorLinkedIn, 2026

As Director General of City Unity College, I strongly believe that higher education should remain closely connected to the real needs of the technology industry.
